MADISON, Wis. -- A part-time instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison taught his first class on Islam on Tuesday since drawing criticism this summer for his belief that the U.S. government orchestrated the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.Kevin Barrett touched only briefly on the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, during the session, but he said it would be discussed later in his semester-long course.About 200 students are taking the course taught by Barrett. His views on Sept. 11, 2001, came under question after he appeared on a radio talk show and said he planned to include those views in teaching his course called "Islam: Religion and Culture."Some lawmakers have called for the UW to fire him from the part-time teaching post, but UW-Madison Provost Patrick Farrell decided against it after reviewing the matter.A letter was uncovered last month that shows Farrell warned Barrett to stop associating himself with the university while advocating his views.
