Coroner: Two Found In Madison Apartment Were Stabbed To Death

Police: Victims Were Friends

Updated: 10:22 am CDT August 7,2006

The Dane County coroner said that the two people found dead in a south side apartment during the weekend were murdered.

Coroner John Stanley said that the man and woman were stabbed to death. He said in a statement that "preliminary findings indicate that they both died as the result of homicidal injuries inflicted with a sharp weapon."

The victims -- identified only as a black woman and a 51-year-old white man -- were discovered dead on Saturday afternoon in the Oakridge Apartments in the 2300 block of Cypress Way. The victims' names haven't been released.

A family member of one of the victims apparently found the bodies on Saturday. Police aren't releasing many details about the deaths.

Mike Hanson, Madison police's public information officer, said this weekend that the man lived in the apartment, but it's not clear if the woman lived there, too. They said the two victims were friends.

Madison police Lt. Wayne Strong said that investigators are still looking for a person of interest that they'd like to question in regards to the case.

"He is a person of interest," Strong said. "We believe that he may have been, possibly, at the scene at some point. That is what we need to confirm."

Between six and eight detectives continued to comb the scene for clues on Sunday, WISC-TV reported.

In addition, the Wisconsin Crime Lab was brought out to assist police collecting physical evidence.

"There is a lot of physical evidence that we want to make sure that we collect, everything to help us with the case," Strong said.

A residential manager at apartment building said that the man rented the apartment, WISC-TV reported.

Police estimated that the bodies could have been there since Wednesday.

Authorities are asking anyone with information regarding this case to call the Madison Police Department.
