St. Mary's Corrective Plan Gets Final Approval

Hospital Continues To Offer Uninterrupted Service

St. Mary's Hospital received its final approval on Wednesday for plans to correct problems discovered after a patient died during labor last month.

State and federal authorities accepted that hospital's written plans last week, and on Wednesday an onsite visit confirmed that those plans have been implemented.

St. Mary's said the approval means the hospital will continue to provide uninterrupted service to all patients, including those served by Medicare and Medicaid.

The hospital had been ordered to create the plan after Jasmine Gant, 16, died at the hospital. Gant was given a spinal epidural drug intravenously and died giving birth.

The plan proposed to the state is similar to the one submitted to federal investigators, but it also includes details on securing medication rooms and using badges to get access to the rooms.

The hospital is also changing the labels on epidural and block medications to improve safety.

The state said it will not take further action to revoke the hospital's license or suspend new admissions at the hospital.
