Residents Seek Compromise

The Madison Common Council will decide on Tuesday night whether to accept or decline a $25 million redevelopment project for Midvale Plaza.

The proposal calls for a four-story, mixed-use facility including 46 condos, 100 apartments and a larger library.

But some residents are opposed to the project, mainly because of size.

"The height was our big thing. We all said, ideally, one story would be great, two would be livable, three would be tops, and when they brought the rendering, it was four stories," said Rose Severson, who lived across from the plaza for 13 years.

Some residents feel that the developer did not pay attention to their requests when drafting redevelopment plans. They hope the proposal fails so they can go back and work out some compromises, WISC-TV reported.

"What we're hoping is to have the opportunity to renegotiate, just a few things, give and take a little. Everyone can't have what they want -- that's obvious -- but we don't want to be stampeded on either," Severson said.

But Madison Alderwoman Brenda Konkel said she supports the developer's plan.

"This is new. Change is hard but this is what we expect in the city and it may be one of the first developments like it in the city -- but it's the way of the future," Konkel said.

Konkel said she supports the development because it fits with the comprehensive plan for the area. She said that as people move to Madison, the city can either grow up or grow out -- and she prefers that some places build taller.

The public commented on the topic for more than two hours Tuesday night. After public comments are done, the council will vote.

The neighborhood hopes to see council members side with it and go with the alternate three-story proposal that neighbors came up with.
