Green Wants Tax Exemption For Soldiers

Congressman Running For Governor

Updated: 12:15 pm CDT July 17, 2006

Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Green said on Monday that he wants to create a state income tax exemption for Wisconsin National Guard or military reserve members.

The exemption would be on the first $5,000 in military pay received by those members.

U.S. Rep. Green, R-Wis., said that younger veterans who work for the state should be able to receive military credit in the state pension system. The credits are currently limited to military service before 1974.

Green would also expand the property tax credit to disabled veterans of any age. Those over age 65 with a disability deemed to be 100 percent service-related are now eligible.

He didn't provide an estimate on how much the proposals would cost.
