Coroner Investigating Teen's Death At St. Mary's Hospital

Officials: Exact Cause Of Death Might Not Be Known For Months

Updated: 6:53 pm CDT July 10, 2006

The Dane County coroner is investigating the death of a 16-year-old at St. Mary's Hospital, WISC-TV reported.

The victim, Jasmine Gant, was a star student at Verona Area High School and a young mother, WISC-TV reported.

The Madison teen was buried on Monday, after she died last Wednesday at the hospital because of an accident there. The exact cause of her death, however, won't be known for perhaps a month or two, according to coroner John Stanley.

Stanley said that the hospital reported Gant's "manner of death" was "accidental."

On Monday, St. Mary's officials confirmed that Gant did pass away at the hospital, but declined all further comment.

"We are honoring the wishes of the family. They have requested we not discuss the death of their daughter," said Sarah Carlson, St. Mary's media relations director.

In Gant's obituary, which appeared in the Wisconsin State Journal this weekend, her "dream was to finish high school, go to college and become a lawyer and to raise her son in a Christian home."

Gant also attended the science-based, non-profit African American Ethnic Academy. An academy official said that Gant stood out among her peers, WISC-TV reported.

"She was a star," said Board of Directors President Virginia Henderson. "She was an excellent student who learned fast ... she had ambitions to go as far as she could."

Henderson said that Gant attended the academy for several years and liked the sciences. She said that she is shocked at Gant's death and remembers her as very active with a lot of friends.

The county coroner always investigates hospital deaths that happen in less than 24 hours or are accidental. In Gant's case, Stanely said that it was both.

As is usual, he said that he's notified the district attorney's office about the investigation, WISC-TV reported.

Gant leaves behind a baby boy, parents and three brothers.
