Doyle Announces Energy Plan, Draws Criticism From Green

Governor Wants To Triple Ethanol Production

Posted: 6:10 pm CDT July 7, 2006

Gov. Jim Doyle unveiled a broad, ambitious goal on Friday for Wisconsin to become a leader in energy independence.

Joined by University of Wisconsin System President Kevin Reilly and industry and environmental leaders, Doyle said he wants a quarter of Wisconsin's electricity and transportation fuel to come from renewable sources by 2025.

He also wants to triple ethanol production, make several UW campuses self-sustaining and provide grants to businesses working on biofuel technology.

"My view on this is that we've got to move forward very strongly on ethanol. We know the country's moving there, and in the end I have little doubt that it will compete," Doyle said.

Doyle's plan was quickly criticized by Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Green.

He said Doyle is flying around the state on the taxpayer's dime to announce "another nebulous" idea without a solid plan.
