A new poll shows that Gov. Jim Doyle leads Republican opponent U.S. Rep. Mark Green by 12 percentage points.

However, among those polled who said that they had an opinion of both, Green leads Doyle by 10 percentage points.

Jim Miller, president of the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Research Institute, said that despite what the numbers look like, this will be a close election. The Institute released the poll on Thursday.

In a head-to-head race, the poll said that Doyle leads Green 49 percent to 37 percent.

Among those who said that they have an opinion of each candidate, Green leads Doyle 52 percent to 42 percent.

Miller said that the numbers should disconcerting for Doyle and encouraging for Green, if he is able to appeal to those who don't have an opinion of him.

Other highlights of the poll include:

  • Doyle leads Green in the city of Milwaukee, 60 percent to 29 percent. But Green, who is from Green Bay, leads Doyle in that city 49 percent to 39 percent.

  • Green leads Doyle among male voters 46 percent to 40 percent, while Doyle leads among women 57 percent to 30 percent.

  • Only 43 percent believe the state is headed in the right direction, while 48 percent think it has gotten off track. Just 17 percent believe the state's economy will improve over the next year, while 39 percent believe it will get worse. Only 27 percent believe the nation is moving in the right direction.

  • Of those polled, just 37 percent had a favorable opinion of President George W. Bush while 59 percent had an unfavorable opinion.
