Possible Stem Cell Royalties Discussed

Institute Is Offering $3B In Grant Money To Generate Research

UPDATED: 11:12 am CDT June 19, 2006

The Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation is discussing concerns over the use of its stem cells by a California institute.

At issue is the fact that the UW owns two patents on embryonic cells.

The California institute is offering $3 billion in grant money to try and generate stem cell research.

The state would get one-fourth of the royalties on any discoveries.

WARF directors said that they aren't trying to impede research, that the university just wants a cut of any royalties.
