Governor Surprised By Travelgate Guilty Verdicts

Doyle Says He Won't Return Adelman Donations

Gov. Jim Doyle said he's surprised by the guilty verdicts against a state purchasing supervisor accused of fraud.

Georgia Thompson was convicted Monday of steering a state contract to Adelman Travel Group. Prosecutors said she favored Adelman because of its close ties to the Doyle administration.

During an appearance in Cottage Grove Tuesday, Doyle said the trial made it clear no other administration officials did anything wrong.

"In this case Georgia Thompson indicated she had no contacts at all with anybody higher up. And, again, this is something I looked at very carefully because if there was, I would take it very, very seriously. But the evidence was very clear Georgia Thompson acted on her own," said Doyle. videoWatch Video Of Doyle's Reaction

The governor said he doesn't know where Thompson got the idea to favor Adelman.

Doyle said he's not worried that the conviction will hurt his re-election campaign. He believes voters have more important issues on their minds.

The governor said he won't return thousands of dollars in donations made by executives at Adelman because the travel company hasn't done anything wrong.
