Gov. Jim Doyle called on Congress to lift the ban on federal funding for research on new stem-cell lines.

Doyle spoke to the media Tuesday in the Cottage Grove home of Bill and Laura Weber, whose son Justin, 12, has Type 1 diabetes and will be insulin-dependent until a cure is found.

"Wisconsin … may be the best example in the country of what the problem is that's caused by the current set up, (which makes us) have to set up two parallel, separate lines of research," said Doyle. videoWatch Doyle Speak On Stem-Cell Research

The Webers said they believe a cure can be developed through stem-cell research.

"We have always supported stem-cell research. We're not looking to clone people, but there's so many people who could benefit from it -- and that's hearing it from the doctors at (the University of Wisconsin)," said Bill Weber.

Stem-cell research is expected to play a big role in this fall's gubernatorial race.

Republican candidate Mark Green is against lifting the federal ban, WISC-TV reported.
