DA Wants Jensen Behind Bars During Appeal

Former Assembly Speaker Sentenced To Prison

Updated: 11:50 am CDT June 6, 2006

Dane County's district attorney said that he wants Scott Jensen behind bars while the former Assembly Speaker appeals his conviction for misconduct in office.

DA Brian Blanchard said that Jensen hasn't shown he's likely to win an appeal and therefore wouldn't suffer irreparable harm if he were in prison while he pursued that appeal.

In a filing with the court, Blanchard said that Jensen should report to prison on July 15 as scheduled because of the severity of his crimes.

The Town of Brookfield Republican was convicted in March of three felonies and a misdemeanor for directing aides to campaign on state time. He was given a 15-month prison sentence.

Jensen is appealing his conviction, claiming the jury was not properly instructed by Dane County Circuit Judge Steven Ebert.

The judge will hold a hearing on June 19 on whether Jensen will stay out of prison while he appeals.
