Madison Middle-Schooler Places 14th At National Spelling Bee

Jacobson Was Lone Entrant From Wisconsin

Updated: 1:21 pm CDT June 5, 2006

Madison seventh-grader Isabel Jacobson finished 14th in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee, which was televised Thursday on ESPN.

The O'Keefe Middle School student will probably never forget how to spell "symminct." That's the word that tripped Jacobson up in the seventh round of the competition in Washington D.C.

Jacobson correctly spelled "phlogogenic" in the fourth round. Then she nailed "langlaufer" in the fifth round and "meningococci" in the sixth. She misspelled "symminct" as "cimminct."

Symminct means composed of material that has not been segregated into separate layers of fine and coarse particles.

Jacobson's fellow classmates followed the action on TV back in Madison. Jacobson was the state's lone contestant out of 274 entrants.

New Jersey's Katherine Close won the 79th-Annual Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. Nine- to 15-year-olds from across the country and several foreign nations competed.

There was $40,000 in cash and prizes was up for grabs.
