At least three Dane County child-care centers have switched to bottled water only in response to recent concerns over manganese in tap water.

The Madison Water Utility this week warned people with infants or with live disease to take extra precautions.

The areas of concern are serviced by Well 3 and Well 10, WISC-TV reported.

At least three infant day cares, which are all in or near the affected areas, made the switch to bottled water since Wednesday.

Wee Start Child Care used to use tap water to mix formula, but at the urging of the Madison Health Department, they are buying their water now.

The Head Start facility is also sending letters to parents telling them to use bottled water at home for infants under 6 months old if they are living in the areas affected.

Although the Water Utility said high manganese levels are only a concern during flushing periods, the day care will use bottled water until further notice.

"In my mind it's a precaution ... just looking at the water levels in those wells. However, for infants less than 6 months, we take environmental potential threats very seriously," said Mary Musholt, a pediatric nurse practitioner on the Dane County Parent Council.

Manganese is an important mineral -- in fact, it is part of the formula mixture. But too much manganese can be dangerous for infants under 6 months old, WISC-TV reported.

Angel Colbert works at the day care and has two young kids. She said she saw the manganese advisory on the news.

"So I did a little research on the computer, and I found out that it was both here and on the Westside close to where I live," said Colbert.

Colbert said she is considering buying bottled water now, even though her kids are 1 1/2 and 3 1/2 years old.

"I just feel safer that way ... you never know," said Colbert.
