Local Latino Leaders Disagree On Bush's Immigration Plan

Area groups and leaders in the local Latino community are not ready to back President George W. Bush's immigration plan.

WISC-TV sat down with Latino leader and former school board member Juan Jose Lopez who watched the president's speech.

Lopez said the president needs to address the root of the immigration problem by stopping American businesses that go to Mexico to exploit Mexican workers.

Lopez said that exploitation encourages Mexican citizens to come to the U.S.

But another local Latino leader, Peter Munoz, believes the National Guard will dissuade the vigilantes from coming into this country and ruining what good Latinos have accomplished here already.

Lopez said Bush's plan to crack down on illegal immigrants would make Dane County's Latino population very uneasy.

"It's going to create a lot of uneasiness, it's going to create a lot of fear," said Lopez. "This is not a natural disaster. This is a crisis because we have never had a good policy, or it has never been implemented properly."

Lopez said both the Republican and Democratic parties are feeding into the fears of the American people, by pushing a band-aid approach, which targets Mexicans.

Lopez would like to see politicians ask Latinos who have been in the U.S. for years for their input on a solution to illegal immigrants entering this country.
