Chvala Sent To Home Detention

Former Legislator Sentenced To Nine Months In Jail

Updated: 3:17 pm CDT May 15, 2006

Former lawmaker Chuck Chvala can go home again.

Dane County Sheriff's officials placed the disgraced former state Senate majority leader on home detention on Monday morning.

Chvala is serving a nine-month jail sentence for felony misconduct stemming from his role in the caucus scandal. He's served the first three months in the Dane County Jail with work-release privileges. Sheriff's officials said that he's been pursuing a career as a real estate agent.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Elise Schaffer said that Chvala will now be allowed to spend his off-hours at home rather than jail. He'll have to wear an electronic monitoring bracelet and a box on his belt that transmits his location.

Schaffer said that the decision to move Chvala to home detention was a routine one since he's little threat to the community and his behavior in jail has been problem-free.

Chvala is one of five lawmakers charged in the caucus scandal, a secret probe into corruption at the state Capitol.
