E-mail Effort Opposes DNR Plan To Kill Wolf
DNR Officials Said Sending Animal To Sanctuary Is Unlikely
Updated: 12:30 pm CDT May 13, 2006
MADISON, Wis. -- More than 100 people have sent e-mails to the state Department of Natural Resources objecting to its plan to kill a wolf that attacked a calf and a dog east of Wisconsin Dells.DNR officials have decided to trap and destroy the wolf because of the attacks -- neither of which killed the animals -- and because the wolf seems to be accustomed to humans, which could pose a danger. When a wolf sanctuary near Fort Collins, Colo., learned the wolf was to be killed, supporters sent e-mails asking the state to send the animal to the sanctuary.DNR biologist Adrian Wydeven said that it's unlikely because of liability concerns, but sanctuary spokesman Frank Wendland said that he has liability coverage of $2 million for the 27 wolves and wolf-dog hybrids he keeps in enclosures on the sanctuary's 180 acres.Stay tuned to WISC-TV and Channel 3000 for continuing coverage.
