Program Helps Latino Parents Connect With Students, School

Training Under Way For Session Leaders

Posted: 9:21 pm CDT May 11, 2006

Latino parents of Madison schoolchildren may soon learn how to better connect with their students and the school district through a new partnership program.

Training is under way to teach social workers and others how to lead 16-part training sessions.

The sessions will be designed to help parents learn what they can do on a daily basis to help their children succeed in the classroom.

"You know what their kids should be doing in school. How they can help; how to form relationships with the school; how to form relationships with each other to have their own parents' group, because often in some of the language sub communities it's hard to fit into the PTA when you don't speak English," said Joe Nigh, a bilingual counselor at Madison East High School.

Nigh said he hopes parenting sessions can someday be taught in more languages so other ethnic groups can also be helped.
