Federal Officials Investigate Madison Laundry Company

Workers Allege Unsafe Conditions

Updated: 3:54 pm CDT May 5, 2006

Federal officials are looking into allegations of unsafe working conditions at a company that does laundry for Madison's St. Mary's Hospital.

Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating Superior Health Linens.

Workers at the company said that they contacted Unite Here, a union representing other laundry and hospitality workers about the conditions at the company, WISC-TV reported.

Group leaders said that they are attempting to raise awareness about what they said is a community issue.

Unite Here released a report in which workers allege conditions at the company aren't only a concern for employees, but they could also lead to dangerous conditions at the hospital.

Joseph Costigan of Unite Here, said that workers and the union are worried.

"We are concerned about the conditions of potential cross-contamination that is occurring at Superior where clean linens are juxtaposed and put in contact with dirty linens," Costigan said.

Superior Health Linens issued a statement that said it refutes what it calls the "unfounded" claims.

OSHA officials said that Superior Health Linens hasn't had any previous violations or incidents. They expect the investigation to be completed in a couple weeks, WISC-TV reported.
