8-year-old injured in crash flown to hospital
Deputies: Teen driver distracted by control dial
An 8-year-old boy was flown to a Madison hospital and two others were seriously injured after a distracted driving crash on Sunday, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called to County Road K in the town of Darlington at 7:51 a.m. for a report of a single-vehicle crash.
Investigators said a 17-year-old Darlington boy was driving an SUV east on County Road K when he was distracted by reaching to adjust a control dial and drove the SUV onto the right shoulder. He over-corrected, drove into the opposite ditch and down an embankment. The SUV rolled onto its passenger side.
Brian E. Lancaster, 41, of Darlington and an 8-year-old passenger were ejected, deputies said.
All three were taken to Lafayette County Memorial Hospital. The 8-year-old was later flown to a Madison hospital.
The driver was cited on suspicion of inattentive driving and failure to have passengers in seat belts. Lancaster was cited on suspicion of a seat belt violation and possession of open intoxicants as a passenger.
The Darlington Police Department, Darlington Fire Department, and Rural Medical Ambulance assisted at the scene.
