BELOIT, Wis. -- Police have arrested a suspect in Beloit in the murder of Julienne McGuire.A co-worker discovered her body inside her downtown Edward Jones office on March 27.McGuire, 44, was found dead at her office at Edward Jones Investments. She had apparently opened the office at about 8 a.m., and a co-worker discovered her at about 9:30 a.m., WISC-TV reported.Shawn Brooks, 35, of Beloit was arrested on Monday night at a Beloit gas station.Brooks faces a first-degree intentional homicide charge. He will appear Wednesday at the Rock County Circuit Court.Brooks was arrested after the Wisconsin State Crime Lab matched DNA evidence from the murder scene to him, WISC-TV reported."I can tell you that prior to the state crime lab calling us with the information Monday, that Mr. Brooks was not on our radar screen. He had not come up as a suspect yet," said Beloit Police Chief Sam Lathrop. "And it's unknown if he ever would have, except for the work that the crime lab did."Also on Monday night, police said that they conducted two searches of residences occupied by Brooks.Brooks does have a history of criminal behavior, WISC-TV reported. He was convicted 10 years ago of second-degree sexual assault of a child and will be listed for life in the state's sex offender registry.Inside the Edward Jones office, McGuire's former boss said things are finally looking optimistic."I think my first reaction is that it was a relief knowing that someone has been caught. It's not closure, but it's in the right direction," said Don Theis, owner of Edward Jones Investments. "The toughest thing is that she's not here. She was a great employee. She was a wonderful, wonderful person. She was sunshine and happiness all the time -- areal asset to the business, but more importantly a real asset to the community and to her family."At the Hometown Diner next door, business was slow during Tuesday's lunch hour. There has been a gradual decrease in business since the murder, WISC-TV reported."Our business has been really slow, and now that they've caught the guy, I hope people start coming back downtown. They need to feel safe, and now I think they can feel safe," said Jackie Spafford, owner of the Hometown Diner. While Brooks remains in custody at the Rock County Jail, police said the investigation continues. Authorities haven't discussed the cause of death or a possible motive."The devil is in the details right now. We have additional work to do. We have additional people to interview. We have search warrants to complete. We have additional evidence that we're searching for," said Lathrop. The Edward Jones office has set up a fund for McGuire's three children. Checks should be made to the Julienne McGuire Memorial Fund, and can be dropped off at the Edward Jones office in downtown Beloit.Police said that they have been questioning McGuire's estranged boyfriend, but it's likely that he won't be interrogated again in the case. The killing is the city's second of the year.
