UW Chancellor Requests Slashing Budget For UW Catholic Student Group

Decision Now With ASM

Updated: 11:20 am CDT April 17,2006

Controversy is brewing between the UW Roman Catholic Foundation and the chancellor as funding for the group is in question.

University of Wisconsin Chancellor John Wiley has agreed with a national group to cut funding to the UWRCF.

Wiley said the money comes from university funding and therefore cannot support a religious organization.

The Rev. Randy Timmerman disagrees, saying that the money comes from student fees not university funding.

"The vast majority of other student organizations are at the level of 100 percent in their budget," said Timmerman. "We're not asking for 100 percent. We just want to be treated with the same level as the other organizations."

"It's hurtful," said UW student Rachel Miller. "I've been very blessed to never have been in a situation where I've ever felt discriminated against in my life before, but ever since this whole situation started, it makes you feel like there's something wrong with being Catholic."

Chancellor Wiley has chosen not to release the letter he wrote to the Associated Students of Madison (ASM), and has been unavailable for comment.

ASM will make the final decision on which organizations get the funds.

The church said it is willing to go to court to fight for the financial support.
