MADISON, Wis. -- A local mother is taking her crusade to make sure the air in every Wisconsin school doesn't make the students sick statewide.Jeanne Black, of Darlington, took her cause to Edgewood College nursing students on Friday morning to enlist their support for the cause.Black is backing a bill in the state Legislature to oversee new school construction while trying to remedy problems in existing schools. The measure would create a task force to supervise, WISC-TV reported. The measure has passed the state Senate, and she's hoping the Assembly will take it up next month."Some schools were using some strong chemicals because they couldn't get their chalkboard cleaners as well those white boards," Black said. "But again, sometimes just using vinegar and water (is a solution). OK, it might not clean it as well, but if we don't have real good ventilation, you don't want to have those chemical fumes in a building."Black's support for the bill was inspired by her daughter Jade, who she said became seriously ill from poor air quality at school, WISC-TV reported.Black said that Jade was diagnosed with severe mold-induced asthma and suffered headaches, migraines, blurred vision, rashes on her face, stomach aches and nausea while attending Darlington Elementary and Middle School. The symptoms subsided when the girl transferred to another school under doctor's orders, she said. The superintendent of Darlington schools said that air testing has been done and no serious issues have been identified.
