Jensen Gives Up Assembly Seat

State Representative Could Face Prison For Misconduct

Updated: 5:22 pm CST March 21, 2006

State Rep. Scott Jensen said goodbye to the Wisconsin Legislature on Tuesday.

Jensen, R-Waukesha, announced that he would step down from his longtime Assembly seat last week.

His leaving on Tuesday comes 10 days after a jury in Dane County Circuit Court found him guilty of misconduct in public office for using tax-paid employees to do campaign work for Republican candidates on state time when he served as Assembly speaker.

He was convicted of three felony misconduct counts and a misdemeanor and could face up to 16 years behind bars and $35,000 in fines.

He remains free on bond until then.

Jensen had served in the Legislature since 1992 and resigned his leadership post when he was charged in 2002, but has continued to serve in the Assembly.

Gov. Jim Doyle said that he won't be scheduling a special election to fill the Assembly seat because Waukesha officials advised him that they would prefer to wait for the general election in November to fill the vacancy.
