I-Pods Damaging Hearing

New Poll Shows High Schoolers With Hearing Loss

I-Pods could be damaging your teen's hearing.

A new Zogby poll released by the American Language and Hearing Association found more than half of high school students surveyed have experienced at least one symptom of hearing loss.

For adults that number is 37 percent.

Hearing experts believe earphones are a major culprit.

"The general rule of thumb that we're giving our patients right now is 60 percent of the volume on your MP3 player for 60 minutes," said audiologist Craig Kasper.

Experts say it's believed some players can reach 130 decibels.

That's comparable to the noise an airplane generates during takeoff.

To avoid that people can now buy specially cast earphones, which block out background noise so users don't have to listen so loud.
