Editorial: Keep Gorman Project On The Table

Development Plans For East Washington Avenue

What this editorial is not doing is asking that developer Gary Gorman and the city of Madison return to the table to negotiate further Gorman's proposal to redevelop the 800 block of East Washington Avenue.

If neither side has a reasonable solution to the $2-million problem that currently exists, there's no point. Gorman has his position and it's reasonable. The city has its position and it is equally reasonable. Perhaps, this is simply one of the situations where a good proposal just doesn't work.

But that's the rub: It is such a good proposal.

The development would be a real gem for a very important part of our city. It's a great complement to existing neighborhood plans and the soon-to-emerge Madison central park development. It'd be great to find a way to pull this off.

We know both sides will listen to reasonable alternatives. We hope there's still the time and willingness to pursue them.
