Foundation Protests UW Student Fees For Catholics

Group Sends Letter To Chancellor

Updated: 2:04 pm CST February 27, 2006

The organization working to keep church and state separate wants the University of Wisconsin-Madison to stop giving student fee money to the Roman Catholic Foundation.

The Freedom From Religion Foundation has written a letter to Madison Chancellor John Wiley urging him to veto a decision that directs $147,000 in student fees to the UW Catholic Foundation.

The group said that some of the funds will pay for Lenten booklets.

Interim Dean of Students Lori Berquam said that Wiley will consider the foundation's request as part of his annual overall review of student fees and the groups they fund. She said that review will be done in about a week.

Freedom From Religion co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor said that the funding opens the floodgates to demands for public funding or religion by campus religious entities.

Gaylor said that the Roman Catholic center serves about ten-thousand students and they should fund it.
