Chvala Processed Into Dane County Jail

Former Majority Leader Won't Have Home Detention

Updated: 11:48 am CST February 13, 2006

Former Wisconsin Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala was booked into the Dane County Jail on Monday to begin serving his nine-month jail sentence.

Last fall, he pleaded guilty for felony misconduct in office and illegally funneling campaign contributions. Chvala has been granted work release privileges, so he'll be able to leave the jail every day to work in his office on legal and real estate matters.

The former senator was charged with 20 felony counts in 2002 after an investigation into how legislative caucus staffs were used illegally to run partisan political campaigns.

Chvala was the second lawmaker sentenced to jail time following a probe into allegations legislators were using state employees to run their campaign machines.

Former Senator Brian Burke of Milwaukee was sentenced in a plea deal to six months in jail.

But unlike Burke in Milwaukee County, Dane County authorities won't immediately release Chvala to home detention with electronic monitoring when he reports to jail.

Dane County Sheriff Gary Hamblin says Chvala will be booked in and assigned to a housing unit.

He must also serve two years probation.
