Madison took its first step toward becoming the largest city in North America with citywide wireless Internet on Monday.

The first radio transmitter for wireless Internet was installed Monday afternoon at Main Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, WISC-TV reported.

The first phase of the wireless Internet project involves Internet access in downtown Madison, Dane County Airport and Alliant Energy Center by the end of March.

Cellnet Technologies, the contractor for the project, said that Madison could have wireless Internet access citywide in a year.
