People’s Legislature Pushing Principles Of Clean Government

The Grassroots Organization Wants Reform

Posted: 12:26 pm CST January 24, 2006

Many Wisconsinites have been pushing principles of clean government for years. Now, members of the newly formed People’s Legislature believe the iron is truly hot, and that there is growing disgust among Wisconsin’s voters.

In a packed hearing room Monday, members of the grassroots People's Legislature held their own public hearing, and invited Wisconsin's top politicians to testify.

They all declined -- but not Lyndee Woodliff, the former Republican Caucus staffer-turned whistleblower.

Woddliff ignited the ‘Scandal Under The Dome,’ that led to charges against five lawmakers, News 3 reported. This was her first visit to the state Capitol since the scandal broke

“I am a commoner, the daughter of a dairy farmer, and the sister of nine siblings,” Woodliff told the group. “I have never known wealth or power, and frankly, I don't seek it. My heart has always been with the downtrodden, the abused, the forgotten."

Woodliff said she first came to the Capitol wide-eyed, looking to help the people of Wisconsin.

“But what I saw in this building were lawmakers who were lawbreakers. Men and women who thumbed their nose at the very laws they created,” Woodliff said. “And when exposed, complained that the laws that they had made were too complicated for them to comprehend."

One of those lawmakers was prosecuted and convicted by E. Michael McCann, Milwaukee County District Attorney.

“The Capitol is on fire -- literally on fire," said McCann. “One can think almost of lifting off the lid of a garbage can, and finding worms and maggots, one would never believe would be found in state government."

“Fight, people. We have something very valuable in our democracy to fight for," said Woodliff. She said if you don't think one person can make a difference, “look at me.”

Members of the People's Legislature are being encouraged to hold their own public hearings in communities across Wisconsin to keep the pressure on those who could make change happen.

Here's more on the agenda of the People’s Legislature:
  • A government accountability board that would provide penalties for misconduct.

  • A better system to track who's hiring lobbyists.

  • They would like to see a deadline and procedure for voter registration.

  • Identification before you can vote at polling places.

  • Voting rights restored for felons who've served their time.
