Prosecutor Might Charge More In Mob Beating Case

Victim Listed In Satisfactory Condition

Updated: 10:14 am CST December 30, 2005

Milwaukee police are continuing their investigation of a mob beating, and a prosecutor is mulling charges in the case.

Five teens were questioned on Thursday in juvenile court. Officials said that they believe at least three of them are members of a street gang called the "Tray-Six Mafia." No charges have been filed yet but a prosecutor is continuing to review police reports.

On Thursday, five teens were referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office for possible attempted homicide charges, according to Milwaukee police.

The group of five includes three juveniles -- ages 14, 16 and 16 -- and two 17-year-olds

The initial hearings on Thursday allowed the state to keep the boys, ages 14, 16 and 16, in juvenile detention until the police complete more of their investigation. None of the three showed any emotion as the prosecutor read the details. No formal charges have been filed.

Authorities have questioned two more people on Friday morning, and a police spokesman said that the department might seek to have prosecutors charge at least one of them.

The investigation centers on a Monday night incident in Milwaukee. Police said that Samuel McClain, 50, honked for a group of young people to move out of the street. The group, estimated to include as many as 15 young men and boys, dragged McClain from his car and beat him nearly to death.

A hospital spokeswoman said that McClain is in satisfactory condition.
