Chuck Chvala Timeline

This is a timeline of the major events in the in the state Capitol corruption scandal focused on former state Senate Majority Leader Chuck Chvala:

  • Dec. 15, 2005: Chvala was sentenced to nine months in Dane County Jail and two years probation for his part in the state Capitol corruption scandal. This sentence is three months in jail longer than the plea deal recommendation.
  • Dec. 13, 2005: Dane County Circuit Judge David Flanagan rejects defense attorney calls that he recuse himself from sentencing portion of the case because he wrote a letter suggesting that prosecutors require Chvala to pay restitution.
  • Dec. 8, 2005: Chvala apologized for his actions in the court filings, but downplayed his actions in the scandal. He asked the judge to sentence him to no more than community service.
  • Nov. 30, 2005: Former state Sen. Brian Burke was sentenced to six months in jail and ordered to pay almost $88,000 in fines for using his office to run his failed bid for attorney general and for refusing to turn over a subpoenaed document. Judge William Foust said that he imposed jail time on Burke because other public officials need to get the message that abusing the public trust has serious consequences.
  • Oct. 25, 2005: Facing 19 felony charges, Chvala strikes a plea agreement with prosecutors and pleads guilty to two counts: felon misconduct in public office and making an illegal campaign contribution. As part of the deal, Chvala avoided a trial and the other felony charges, including extortion, will be dismissed.
  • Oct. 17, 2002: Chvala charged with 20 felony counts, including extortion, misconduct in public office and filing false reports with the state Elections Board.
  • June 2002: State Sen. Brian Burke charged with 18 felony counts for allegedly using his Capitol office to collect campaign contributions for his now-defunct bid for Wisconsin attorney general.
