DODGEVILLE, Wis. -- News 3 first reported that a national conservative group threatening to sue the Dodgeville School District last Friday. The Liberty Counsel claims Ridgeway Elementary School changed the words to "Silent Night" in its holiday program, an incident that has received national attention.News 3 reported that as of last Friday, Dodgeville's School District received more than 2,000 negative e-mails from across the country -- none, however, from parents in the district. (See School District Criticized For Change Of Tune)The district administrator told News 3 one of these e-mails called the whole town pagans. But, as News 3 reported, the school didn't change the song at all. The song is part of a published play, sung to the melody of "Silent Night." City officials in Dodgeville say the incident's national attention failed to recognize the town's true character. Members of the community say it's their own perception of the town that matters."I think that it's pretty silly, and I think that there's a lot more important things going on that we should be taking care of than something like this," said Cheryl Keeney of Dodgeville."It's a little bit blown out of proportion because, like I said, it's the holiday season, and we're a community that cares. And I hope the differences are worked out," said Jim McCaulley, Dodgeville mayor. The district administrator said she's received praise from the community, but more negative e-mails from across the country as well. The Liberty Counsel is threatening to sue the district, and still plans to take legal action. But the school isn't changing a thing to the program, which is set for next Tuesday.
