MADISON, Wis. -- State Republicans have modified a bill that would let Wisconsin residents carry hidden weapons by adding a provision that would let police check whether owners of cars that they stop are carrying concealed weapons.A second provision in the bill would prohibit officers from drawing their own guns on motorists simply because the motorists have a concealed-carry permit. The amendments were added to satisfy the concerns that police lobbying organizations had with the bill.Officials with the State Trooper Association said that the group is now backing the plan because the bill will now allow law enforcement to access a list of permit-holders while conducting traffic stops, WISC-TV reported.Supporters of the concealed-carry measure said that people should be allowed to shoot criminals who attack them. Opponents argue that the bill will only encourage gun violence and will leave people unsure of whether others around them are carrying hidden weapons.Gov. Jim Doyle vetoed a similar measure in 2003.
