MADISON, Wis. -- State lawmakers are hoping to hit middle ground with the governor over smoking bans.Lawmakers delayed a vote Tuesday that could eventually overrule any local smoking bans already in effect. The bill would wipe out 23 ordinances across the state, including Madison, and allow smoking in bars and bowling alleys, but not in dining areas. The sponsor of the bill said he'd talk to the governor about making a compromise this week."Because of the economic impact the ban has had in the communities were it has passed, it's been elevated to a statewide level," said Sen. Scott Fitzgerald. "It's become a statewide issue."Meanwhile those against the statewide bill believe Gov. Jim Doyle will not sign any legislation that weakens local smoking ordinances.
