For more than three decades Kruger was the calm steady voice behind the scenes of incidents such as the Red Caboose Daycare shooting.

He spent an equal amount of time helping lead the Town of Madison Fire Department.

Kruger always said one of his most memorable calls was helping deliver a baby.

"That's what makes the call worthwhile," said Kruger in a prior interview. "You get closure on a call sometimes. You can see the results."

Kruger is survived by his wife and two children including a son, Ben, who is also a Town of Madison firefighter.

A convoy of fire trucks, squad cars and other emergency vehicles will lead Kruger's funeral procession Tuesday.
