UPDATED: 8:58 am CDT September 6, 2005

Some Madison City Council members are going to introduce a proposal Monday to loosen the city's ban on smoking in restaurants and bars.

The proposal would allow the right to smoke in bars, bowling alleys and separately ventilated rooms in restaurants.

Another resolution will also be offered to have a public advisory referendum on the issue in April.

Council members also plan to propose a temporary exemption for businesses experiencing economic hardships because of the city's smoke-free law. Madison bars went smoke-free July 1.
