MADISON, Wis. -- A survey released Wednesday from Chamberlain Research Consultants shows how divided Madison is on the smoking ban.In a sample of 605 randomly selected Madisonians over the age of 18, almost 50 percent support the ban and about 43 percent oppose it. There's a 4 percent margin for error, Chamberlain Research Consultants said.Another thing that jumps out from the poll is that Madison residents want to decide the matter themselves. Almost 70 percent want a referendum on the issue. The poll showed that 47.4 percent would vote for the smoking ban and 46.6 would vote against it.Last week, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz told News 3 that he opposes the referendum. On Wednesday night, his aides said he is too busy to comment on the new survey.
