The Madison Fire Department responded to reports of a broken water pipe in the Trafalgar Apartments on the north side at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, officials say.

Firefighters observed water coming from a closed elevator door on the first floor of the building at 2802 Dryden Drive, according to a release.

Firefighters say they also saw water coming down the stairwell from the second floor. Crews shut off the water to prevent further damage to the building.

According to the release, seven units of the 33-unit three-story building were affected by the water damage.

The City Building Inspector determined the building cannot be occupied Tuesday night leaving 44 occupants displaced, officials say.

The Red Cross – Badger Chapter sent a team to the scene to assist residents, according to the release.

Damages are not yet known.
