Manure spread on a frozen field is blamed for killing hundreds of brown trout in the west branch of the Sugar River.

The river, near Mount Horeb, was just removed from a government list of polluted waters in October, but the state wildlife officials said a farmer last week spread liquid cow manure on an icy field.

Recent warm temperatures melted the ice, sending the waste into the stream.

The Department of Natural Resources has recovered more than 100 dead trout so far.
