A 54-year-old Rock County man is recovering from a gunshot wound and faces charges for allegedly endangering safety with a dangerous weapon while intoxicated.

Rock County sheriff's officials said they were called to a home on West Beloit Newark around 6:15 a.m. and found Santiago Preciado-Alvarez, who had been shot with a .45h-caliber semiautomatic handgun.

Preciado-Alvarez told deputies he got the gun out to scare off coyotes that were allegedly bothering his horses and had it in the rear waistband of his slacks when it went off. The bullet traveled through the man's buttocks and left calf, and became lodged in his left ankle. His wife drove him to the hospital, where he was admitted for surgery with non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives said the man was possibly intoxicated at the time of the shooting. He faces a Class A misdemeanor for for endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon-while intoxicated.
