The World Health Organization estimates the relief effort will cost billions of dollars. Sunday's earthquake and tsunamis hit 11 countries and claimed the lives of more than 77,000 people. Tens of thousands of people are still missing and more than a million people are homeless.

Julie Adriansjach, owner of Bandung Restaurant, said she has ties to Indonesia and after seeing the devastation on TV, she is determined to help

"This is the most tragic thing I've ever seen or heard of," said Adriansjach.

Starting on New Year's Eve until Jan. 9, the Bandung Restaurant will donate 10 percent of its total sales to benefit survivors of the 9.0 earthquake and resulting tsunamis.

"They're going to need water, they're going to need medicine. I think cash is the best way to get that over there, so that they can get the things that they need," Adriansjach said.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison's Indonesian Student Organization is also collecting cash for the victims.

"We just want to do what we can to help out especially where it happened. It's the rural area where they don't have much access to drinking water and after this tragedy it will be even worse," said Sonny Suciawan, Indonesia Student Organization vice president.

The United Nations said more than $200 million has already been pledged or donated to help victims. President Bush pledged $35 million in aid, Japan is donating $30 million, and the United Kingdon is giving $28 million. In addition, Saudi Arabia has committed to $10 million.

The two local groups hope to raise a couple thousand dollars, which will be given to the Red Cross for distribution. The Red Cross is already sending over relief supplies, such as plastic sheets and family size tents for people to live in.

If you want to help, you can call the Red Cross at 233-9300.
