MADISON, Wis. -- A Harmony Grove family is building hope for other families with sick children. The family is raising $200,000 for a sibling care center at the new UW Children's Hospital.
Toni Morrissey reports on the story of a little boy that touched many viewers just a year ago -- Tyler Tracy. ( Read Report )The Tracy family is raising money in the boy's name after he passed away from a rare genetic disorder, Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Complex Deficiency.Morrissey reported last August about Tyler's parents' desperate attempt to find a special formula to keep him alive. Despite finding formula through the help of News 3 viewers, the 17-month-old died in October. The Tracys have set up the Tyler Tracy Foundation, which is now raising money for a center where families can get temporary care for siblings of hospitalized children."We felt that Tyler was here for a purpose -- to give us some strength that we didn't know we had … to try to help others … to take the sense of courage and spirit and purpose he gave us and turn it into something that would last and give some relief to other families," said Tyler's dad, Jeff. The sibling care center will be a 500-square-foot space that will be part of the new children's hospital. Construction starts in October and will be completed in 2007.The hospital has a developing sibling care program, but this would be the first time the program would have a dedicated space. For more information on the foundation, call (608) 332-5945 or go to TylerTracyFoundation.
