A Madison playwright has written a play about the UW student who faked her abduction last spring.

"Audrey Seiler, Where Are You?" opens this weekend at the Broom Street Theater.

Seiler captured the nation's attention in March when she mysteriously disappeared from her campus-area apartment. In the end, Seiler admitted she made up a story about an armed man abducting her and holding her hostage. She was sentenced to three years of probation after she pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor counts of obstructing officers.

Playwright John Sable and the Broom Street Theater will attempt to bring the Seiler story to the stage with the satire.

"Seiler's story speaks for everyone who has ever felt depressed, wanted to escape the pressures of life or who just needed a little more attention," Sable said. "We all have some Audrey Seiler inside us. That is why we were so quickly captivated by her plight. That is why her story had to be written."

Sable is known for controversial theater, including "Trench Coat Mafia" after the Columbine shootings and "Why Sex? Why Not the Violin?" about feminist porn film star Nina Hartley.

Madison-area director Dana Pellebon will direct the play. She has also worked on local productions of "Candyland, You Slut!" and "The Vagina Monologues." Jaime Waelchli will play Seiler.
