Ruling Could Cost Progams $200 Million

State Programs Could Be Affected By Loss Of Gaming Funds

Funding for dozens of state programs could be in jeopardy if more than $200 million in tribal gaming revenue falls through.

The state Supreme Court nullified a compact with the Forest County Potawatomi this week.

The tribal gaming revenue helps pay for state programs ranging from meals for the elderly to fighting chronic wasting disease.

The tribe has decided against making a $34 million payment due to the state in June. Potawatomi Attorney General Jeff Crawford said it may still make a $6 million payment that was required under the previous compact.

Crawford also said Gov. Jim Doyle has contacted the tribe about setting up a meeting to discuss the ruling and its implications.

He said the tribe has not decided what its next step may be.

Crawford says it's possible the Potawatomi could negotiate a solution without going to court.
