Everyone who has had a lemon for a car knows how frustrating it can be, and now there's a major power struggle brewing to change the law set up to protect consumers.

Wisconsin's lemon law is considered by many experts to be the best of its kind in the country. But car makers claim it has major flaws that are costing them a lot of money, causing the law to receive some attention from state lawmakers, who drafted a new law.

In what could be construed as a David versus Goliath fight, the Department of Transportation officials are trying to convince lawmakers to put the brakes on a bill aimed at dramatically changing the 20-year-old law.

At the center of the battle is a clause allowing consumers to sue for double damages if they reject settlement offers. Car makers say attorneys are driving that one all the way to the bank.

Some drivers think car companies just want to find ways to force consumers to get less than they deserve by strengthening corporate lawyers.

Representatives of the University of Wisconsin Law School's Consumer Law Litigation Clinic say they've repeatedly asked car makers for concrete examples of corruption by consumers or their attorneys and so far, they say not a single case has been produced.
