JUST AS LIFE FOR A WISCONSIN FAMILY WAS BEGINNING
- EVERYTHING CHANGED.
-- MICHELLE --
JIM GAINEY IS A 31-YEAR-OLD HUSBAND AND FATHER OF
TWO BOYS AGES TWO AND FOUR.
HE IS ALSO IN A FIGHT FOR HIS LIFE.
NEWS 3 REPORTER DAVE DELOZIER IS HERE WITH JIM'S STORY.
ERIC AND MICHELLE - THE THING ABOUT JIM GAINEY AND
HIS FAMILY IS THIS - THEY ARE JUST LIKE ANY OF US
- EXCEPT FOR ONE THING:
THEY KNOW THAT A CANCER DIAGNOSIS WILL MOST LIKELY
ROB THEM OF PRECIOUS DAYS TOGETHER.
BECAUSE OF THAT - THEY HAVE A MESSAGE THAT MIGHT JUST
SAVE YOUR LIFE - AND ALSO - HELP YOU TO LIVE IT.
THEY ARE THE MOMENTS - THEY ARE LIFE.
oh, this is the big family reunion right here.
FACES THAT TELL A STORY OF A PERFECT LIFE - THAT SHOULD
a lot of days where i look at it and go what happened.
this wasn't supposed to happen.
WITH TWO YOUNG BOYS - THAT'S SHAMUS HE'S 4 AND FINN,
HE'S JUST 2 - LIFE FOR JIM GAINEY IS NO LONGER A GIVEN.
i actually got the diagnosis march 18th that i had
some form of cancer.
found out officially that i had stage four that friday.
THE MONTHS SINCE HAVE BEEN ABOUT TRYING TO SAVE AS
MUCH OF HIS LIFE AS HE CAN.
HE HAS BEEN THROUGH 27 ROUND OF CHEMO...AND AN ATTITUDE
ADJUSTMENT AS WELL.
i think i'm a lot more grateful for what i have.
i'm more appreciative of jim even on bad days he still
manages to do simple things like tell us he loves
having two young boys is definitely, it is a lot of
what gets me out of bed in the morning especially
when i go through treatments and things like that
is knowing that i get to be there dad and have the
privilege to be there for them.
THEY NOW LIVE FOR EACH DAY - EACH MOMENT.
AND WHEN A LITTLE PAINT ENDS UP - NOT WHERE IT IS
WELL IT JUST DOESN'T MATTER.
i used to get upset about things that are almost completely
EACH DAY IS ABOUT MAKING MEMORIES AS A FAMILY - LIKE
THE DAY WHEN JIM GRADUATED FROM EDGEWOOD COLLEGE.
if there's an opportunity to do something we take
it because why not.
IT WOULD BE EASY TO UNDERSTAND - IN THIS SITUATION
- FOCUSING JUST ON THEMSELVES.
BUT INSTEAD JIM AND CATHERINE ARE TRYING TO LET EVERYONE
KNOW HOW PREVENTABLE COLON CANCER IS..
we want to do what we can to raise awareness about
it so that it doesn't happen to other people.
i don't want another young family to be hit with this
IT HAS TAUGHT THEM TO FOCUS ON THE HERE AND NOW -
THIS MOMENT - THIS LIFE.
enjoy the day, absolutely.
THE GAINEY'S HAVE BEEN ACTIVELY INVOLVED WITH THE
- SCOPE IT OUT 5-K RUN - SET FOR THIS SATURDAY MORNING
IN WARNER PARK.
THEY HOPE THE MONEY RAISED WILL HELP TO ONE DAY FIND
A CURE - BUT THEY ALSO WANT TO HELP RAISE AWARENESS
OF JUST HOW PREVENTABLE COLON CANCER IS.
ERIC AND MICHELLE - IT IS ONE OF THE MOST PREVENTABLE
FORMS OF CANCER - SO LONG AS YOU GET SCREENED.
