BUT FIRST TONIGHT AT SIX.
THE DEBATE OVER MAKING POT LEGAL -- AND A NEW STUDY
DONE HERE IN WISCONSIN.
GOOD EVENING -- I'M ERIC FRANKE.
-- MICHELLE --
AND I'M MICHELLE LI.
TONIGHT WE ASK, JUST HOW HARMFUL IS SMOKING POT FOR
-- ERIC -
A PROFESSOR AT U-W MILWAUKEE DID THE RESEARCH OVER
A FIFTEEN YEAR SPAN.
NEWS 3 REPORTER DAVE DELOZIER IS HERE WITH WHAT THEY
ERIC AND MICHELLE - WITH RECREATIONAL USE OF MARIJUANA
NOW LEGAL IN COLORADO AND WASHINGTON STATE - POLICY
IS MOVING MUCH FASTER THAN THE RESEARCH.
THROUGHOUT THE DEBATE MARIJUANA HAS BEEN CALLED A
GATEWAY DRUG BY SOME AND LESS HARMFUL THAN ALCHOHOL
THE RESEARCH BEING DONE AT U-W MILWAUKEE IS STARTING
TO PROVIDE SOME ANSWERS.
there is still a lot that we need to know.
TO SEPARATE FACT FROM FICTION - KRISTA LISDAHL IS
there's been a huge inovation in magnetic resonance.
SHE IS STUDYING THE BRAIN SCANS OF 200 TEENS AND YOUNG
ADULTS WHO REGULARLY SMOKE MARIJUANA.
what we see is taht increased marijuana use, especially
daily use, is associated with cognitive problems like
slowed processing speed, poor complex attentions so
they can memorize a phone number and things like that
but sustaining their attentions over time is more
difficult and also memory problems
CHANGES TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BRAIN THAT ARE ESPECIALLY
CONCERNING WHEN MEASURED WITH THIS.
we've seen a jump especially in teenager use and actaully
about 6.5% of high school seniors are using marijuana
that is one of my biggest concerns as i said i am
AND YET THAT IS WHY STATE REPRESENTATIVE MELISSA SERGANT
IS WORKING ON LEGISLATION TO LEGALIZE RECREATIONAL
USE OF MARIJUANA IN WISCONSIN.
SHE SEES THE CONTROLS IT WOULD PUT ON WHERE IT'S SOLD,
HOW IT'S SOLD AND TO WHOM IT'S SOLD WOULD ACTUALLY
REDUCE USE BY THOSE UNDER 21-YEARS OF AGE.
this will do a lot i think based on what i've seen
in colorado to decrease usage among our young people.
i think that policy is moving faster than the research.
MORE RESEARCH IS WHAT KRISTA LISDAHL SAYS IS NEEDED.
AND WHILE HER FINDINGS ARE CERTAINLY CAUSE FOR CONCERN
- HER POSITION ON MARIJUANA MIGHT SURPRISE YOU.
i support the decriminalization and increasing methods
like drug courts.
BECAUSE JUST LIKE REPRESENTATIVE SERGANT - SHE BELIEVES
THE CURRENT POLICY IS NOT WORKING.
is probation working? well when it comes to marijuana
i'd have to say no it is not working very well.
KRISTA LISDAHL BELIEVES THAT DECRIMINALIZING OR LEGALIZING
MARIJUANA COULD ACTUALLY MAKE IT SAFER BY LIMITING
THE AMOUNT OF T-H-C IN IT.
IT IS T-H-C THAT IS ASSOCIATED WITH MUCH OF THE DAMAGE
DONE TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BRAIN.
AND ERIC AND MICHELLE - T-H-C LEVELS HAVE BEEN INCREASING
IN RECENT YEARS IN ILLEGALLY SOLD MARIJUANA.
