Local Catholics Protest In Support Of Women Priests

Respond To Priest’s Removal After Supporting Women’s Equality

Updated: 8:55 pm CDT April 19, 2011

Local Catholics are joining the nationwide protests to show their support for women's ordination.

Members of Madison’s chapter of Call to Action, a reform group within the Catholic Church, gathered outside St. Maria Goretti Catholic Church in Madison Tuesday night with signs and prayers.

The demonstration comes in response to Maryknoll priest Fr. Roy Bourgeois' removal from the priesthood after refusing to recant his views on women's equality in the Church.

Call to Action member Jim Green said not allowing women to be ordained would be a great loss to the Catholic Church.

"I think that women bring unique and special gifts to the Church,” Green said. “And we claim to be the Church. The Church as the people of God, not the hierarchical structure of the Church."

Fr. Bourgeios first made headlines in 2008 for attending and preaching at a woman's ordination.

A New York Times/CBS News poll from 2010 showed 59 percent of Catholics are in favor of women becoming priests.
