-- ERIC --
FOUR INCIDENTS IN NINE MONTHS IS ENOUGH FOR ONE DANE
TIM KIEFER - FROM WAUNAKEE IS CALLING ON CLEAR HORIZONS
- THE OPERATOR OF THE MANURE DIGESTER TO VOLUNTARILY
END ITS CONTRACT WITH THE COUNTY.
-- MICHELLE --
NEWS 3 REPORTER DAVE DELOZIER SPOKE WITH THE SUPERVISOR
TODAY -- DAVE, HE'S NOT OPPOSED TO THE ACTUAL DIGESTER.
-- DAVE --
NO - IN FACT HE SEES THE DIGESTER AS A CRITICAL OPERATION
IN IMPROVING OUR ENVIRONMENT.
WHAT TROUBLES HIM IS A SERIES OF SIGNIFICANT ACCIDENTS
AT THE FACILITY THAT CULMINATED WITH AN EXPLOSION
AND FIRE LAST WEEK.
if the manure digesters are working properly that
are very beneficial to lake water quality and the
environment in general.
DANE COUNTY SUPERVISOR TIM KIEFER DOES NOT QUESTION
THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS MANURE DIGESTER - HE DOES HAVE
DOUBTS ABOUT HOW IT IS BE OPERATED.
THOSE DOUBTS STEM FOR A SERIES OF FOUR INCIDENTS OVER
THE COURSE OF JUST NINE MONTHS.
IN NOVEMBER OF LAST YEAR 380,000 GALLONS OF LIQUID
MANURE SPILLED FROM THE DIGESTER.
THEN TWO MONTHS LATER - IN JANUARY - ANOTHER 20,000
GALLONS WERE SPILLED.
ON MARCH 12TH IT HAPPENED FOR A THIRD TIME SPILLING
35,000 GALLONS OF LIQUID MANURE
AND LAST WEEK AN EXPLOSION AND FIRE DAMAGED THE OPERATIONS.
FOR KIEFER THE EXPLOSION AND FIRE TOOK THINGS TO ANOTHER
here you have something where people could easily
have been injured or even killed.
it takes it to a whole...another level.
WHICH IS WHY KIEFER WROTE THIS LETTER TO JIM DITTER
- THE CEO OF CLEAR HORIZONS.
sent it on august 10th.
i have yet to hear from jim ditter the ceo of clear
i'm waiting to hear back from him but the message
of my letter is it is
time for clear horizons to voluntarily
withdraw from its contract.
KIEFER SAYS HE HAS RUN OUT OF PATIENCE WITH CLEAR
HORIZONS BECAUSE OF THE REPEATED PROBLEMS.
we were told this happens once but this can not happen
again and it repeatedly happened again so at least
for me i think they've run out of rope.
CLEAR HORIZONS CONTRACT WITH THE COUNTY IS SCHEDULED
TO RUN FOR ANOTHER ELEVEN YEARS - BUT IF SUPERVISOR
KIEFER HAS HIS WAY THAT WON'T HAPPEN.
we need to have a competent operator in place and
clear horizons is proven that they are not that operator
and they need to go.
-- DAVE --
WE REACHED OUT TO CLEAR HORIZONS FOR COMMENT.
WE SPOKE WITH THE COMPANIES MEDIA REPRESENTATIVE AND
HE DEFERRED COMMENT TO JIM DITTER - THE COMPANIES
WE LEFT A VOICE MESSAGE ON MR.
DITTER'S CELL PHONE BUT - TO THIS POINT - HE HAS NOT
RETURNED OUR CALL.
ERIC AND MICHELLE - WE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS
BECAUSE THE SUPERVISOR SAYS THE COUNTY BOARD IS PREPARED
TO TAKE ADDITIONAL STEPS TO REMOVE CLEAR HORIZONS
AS THE OPERATOR.
